Second affordable Balmain collection

For the second time around, fashion house Balmain comes with a affordable collection for the upcoming Spring season.

Compared to the normal collections, this one is a little less expensive than the normal collections. The prices range from €120 for a t-shirt till €913 for a dress. On Thursday of this Paris Fashion week, the collection will be shown on the catwalk for the first time.

To promote this new collection, Balmain made a special moodvideo. Model Abbey Lee Kershaw and her band Our Mountain have the lead roles in this video. Dressed in the affordable pieces by Balmain, they are walking the streets of New York, which creates a real rock ’n roll feeling. The moodvideo is shot and directed by none other than Dutch photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

Slow start for Paris Fashion Week

Where Milan Fashion started with a bang with letting Gucci took the catwalk at the opening day, Paris Fashion week is taking it a little bit more slow. But with this Fashion week being the last and longest one at the fashion calendar, the best is yet to come.

Yesterday, at the opening, the Parisian catwalk was taken over by shows of Anthony Vaccarello and Communn. Daring mini dresses and maxis with shocking high splits were some highlights of Vaccarello. Communn showed a lot of  shift dresses with yellow accents and shirts with some paradise prints.

Today Dries van Noten has the honor to show his newest collection, but secretly everybody is waiting for thursday, the day when the really big names show up. Balenciaga, Balmain and Nina Ricci will send their models on the catwalk dressed in latest Spring/Summer fashion. And on Friday we will find out what the new collection of Christian Dior is like without Galliano as head designer.

As always, the last three days of Paris Fashion week will be dominated by some of the biggest names in fashion like YSL, Chanel, Valentino, Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton.

Flash mob DvF

The launch of Diane von Furstenberg’s new perfume ‘Diane’ didn’t go unnoticed last Friday. The whole afternoon, there were groups of women all dressed in DvF wrap dresses promoting her newest fragrance while walking the streets of Times Square, Union Square, the Meatpacking District, the Bowery and Soho. Chanting the word ‘DvF’, they wanted everyone to know about DvF’s newest spritz. Also they were handing out scented ribbons and giving the people the chance to win a free bottle of Diane.

To end all this madness the ‘DvF-women’ gave a mega-mob performance to once more promote the new bottle of perfume. As if, this wasn’t enough promotion, there are plans for another flash mob act in Paris. On October 5th Diane von Furstenberg will launch her perfume there at Sephora. There are reportedly 100 dancers and  Sephora employees who will give everybody a special performance.

Fashion Queen Maxima

Even if Prinsjesdag was already two days ago, we’d still like to say how proud we are on our very own Queen to be, Princess Maxima. She has an amazing sense of style and enjoys and understands fashion like few do. She doesn’t play it safe, but is often bold in her choices. And thanks to her confident personality she makes sure that whatever her choice of outfit, she wears the clothes – the clothes never wear her.

She walked the streets in The Hague in a beautiful sea green gown made of crepe georgette by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau. The dress was embroidered with glass beads and had an asymmetrical draping. Maxima finished her look with a stylish Borsalino hat made of felt in a pretty soft beige shade, made by Fabienne Delvigne. Two words say it all: Fashion Royalty!

Spring is in the air at first day Milan Fashion Week

Hot and bright colors and steamy prints graced Milan’s catwalk during the first day of its Fashion Week. Alberta Ferretti’s Spring collection truly brought a tropical storm to the runway.

The famous designer showed all the Spring trends in pure and sleek dresses and jungle chic wear. Starting with the more simple designs, the collection got more and more complex and colored as the show progressed.

But the looks that really stood out were the impressive chiffon evening dresses with a lot of hand-beading and crochet. These ones stole the show and emphasized once more Ferretti’s ultra feminine touch.

Take a look at the whole collection here:

Rodarte inspired by van Gogh

Inspiration can come out of the most unexpected things. Designer sisters Mulleavy of Rodarte created their Spring collection for 2012 with Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and the fairytale Sleeping Beauty in the back of their minds.

While they fell in love with the green and purple colors from Sleeping Beauty they searched for more people who often used this colors. That’s how they wound up with Vincent van Gogh. Besides the green and purple colors they also liked his gold and yellow colors.

Every dress has a bit of van Gogh’s paintings in it. A lot of off-the-shoulder dresses with golden flower prints or embroidered silk sunflowers passed the New York Fashion Week catwalk.

Topman removes sexist t-shirts

After a huge riot on twitter, British fashion house Topman, the male version of Topshop, removed two t-shirts out of the stores because of their sexist prints on it.

One of the shirts had the lines “Nice new girlfriend. What breed is she”, which a lot of women associated with being compared with dogs. The other shirt had a bunch of lame excuses men could use for beating their wife or girlfriend. According to The Guardian, Topman of course stated that the t-shirts had no bad intentions, but still a lot of people were offended by it.

Topman now removed the t-shirts and apologized. A spokeswoman of the brand said: “While we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be lighthearted and carried no serious meaning, we have made the decision to remove these from store and on-line as soon as possible”.

New Fashion School

Condé Nast, publisher of the popular fashion magazines Vogue and GQ, are starting a new school for fashion and design in London. The Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design will be the name of this new school and it will give 300 students the opportunity to become successful in the fashion industry.

Susie Forbes who was previously working for Vogue, will be the head master of the fashion school. According to her it’s more than normal that the school will be in London, because London is the fashion capital of the world. About the education level she said the following in the Telegraph: “With access to some of the sharpest and most creative minds shaping the fashion, design and interiors industries today, we aim to educate students to the highest level.”

The exact location of The Condé Nast College of Fashion and Design is not clear yet, although there are some rumors that it will be right in the centre of London. The college will open in September 2012.
