Cannes Golden Runway
Yesterday’s annual Cannes catwalk show was as always a night filled with over the top glamour and Hollywood’s finest. Organizers Carine Roitfeld and Naomi Campbell dedicated this year’s Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show, which also celebrated the 20th anniversary of amFAR’s Cinema Against AIDS gala, to the late Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor.
Night of gold
Last year the models paraded down the runway in all-black ensembles. This year the Cannes catwalk show was pure gold; inspired by the legacy of amfAR’s late founding international chairman, Elizabeth Taylor. Carine Roitfeld, former editor-in-chief of French Vogue told WWD: “I picked the gold theme because gold is extraordinary. Since it is the 20th anniversary of this event, I thought people should walk away with an incredible memory. For me, this is really a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. When you think of her in ‘Cleopatra’, you have this very powerful image of gold and beauty.”
Charity Couture
To show his love and support for the amFAR charity, Roberto Cavalli coordinated the design and décor for this golden gala that was held at the famous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Anitbes. Designer hot shots like Christian Dior, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Burberry and Prada all created a golden 24k outfit especially for the event. The designs were auctioned for a total of 1.2 million euro’s.
Star Invasion
Cannes was hit by a true model invasion yesterday. Grand names such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio, Joan Smalls, Liberty Ross and Karolina Kurkova were along the 40 models who were rocking the runway in their dazzling golden couture, which stars like Sharon Stone to Heidi Klum and Janet Jackson were able to admire from the front row. The live performances of Dame Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Ellie Goulding and Hot Chelle Rae truly finished off Taylor’s love theatrical greatness.
