Chanel never goes out of style

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was – and maybe still is – one of the most influential fashion designer and is still considered to be one of the world’s biggest style icons.  She had her own ideas and vision about what style and fashion should be and refused to give in to the prevailing image of couture, such as uncomfortable corsets and silhouettes. The latest Chanel video allows us to take a further peek in the interesting story of Gabrielle Chanel and also is completely dedicated to Coco Chanel’s famous little jacket.

The video “Inside Chanel” explains how it was to be a woman back in the day. Those days, women could hardly breath, let alone move, in their tight-as-skin fitting clothes. As a protest, she shook up the world of fashion by translating her own statement into fashion. Gabrielle Chanel thought it was important that women should be able to move in their own clothes. Trying to prove that women could dress well and feel comfortable at the same time, she gave her own twist to men’s suits in the 50’s and turned it into a chic, elegant and sophisticated ladies jacket – better known as the Chanel tweed jacket.

After Gabrielle Chanel has passed away in 1983, Karl Lagerfeld took over her creative studio and still continues to keep the spirit of Coco Chanel alive and kicking. Trying to play a bit with the classic Chanel designs, Karl Lagerfeld has showed us the signature Chanel jackets with a matching skirt, embroidered fabric, playful pastel and bright colours and even with miss-matching jeans. Just as her quote said: “fashion fades, only style remains the same”, Coco Chanel proved us that her signature jacket isn’t only a classic piece but it is also a timeless one.

Little Soho is no stranger to the classic and feminine design of these world-renown jackets, and offers you some pieces for prices that are less harmful to the wallet, but look just as stylish! Click here to see the jackets.

“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance”- Coco Chanel.

Tilda Swinton: the new face of Chanel

Last December, Chanel showed their Métiers d’Art collection in the birth place of Mary, queen of Scots, the Linlithgow Palace in Scotland. Titled Paris- Edinburgh, the collection presented a look that was a hybrid between Scottish heritage and Chanel.

When Coco Chanel had a love affair with the Duke of Westminster (whom she met in 1923), she adopted a more outdoorsy style. After all, a lady can’t go fishing and hunting in her prettiest dress, and it was her need for more practical clothing that made her start wearing the woolens and tweeds that up until then were reserved for men, but not without adding her own special twist them. This essentially evolved to become the style Chanel is known and revered for. In the Métiers d’Art collection, Karl Lagerfeld magnified that heritage by dedicating it to Edinburgh and by appointing Tilda Swinton, a true, redheaded Scot, to be the face of this collection.

Lagerfeld summed up the collection, that had a lot of Scottish influences like tartan prints and kilts, as followed: ‘It’s the idea of Scotland, the mix of Coco Chanel and Mary Stuart, two queens of fashion’.

According to Lagerfeld, Tilda Swinton is also a queen of fashion. With her unconventional look, her apparent Scottish heritage and her timeless elegance, he describes her as a true, modern woman. Chanel’s new campaign will hit the shelves in June.

Happy green year!

Move over 2012’s Mandarin; Emerald gets the ‘green’ light for 2013.

Let’s assume that we make it past 21-12-2012 and look into our bright, colorful future. Pantone, provider of professional colour standards to the design industries, crowned ‘emerald green’ as the colour of 2013.

“The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute of the shade. “This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors,” Eiseman adds.

Chanel, Roberto Cavalli, Jonathan Saunders, Kenzo, Acne and Marios Schwab already incorporated the colour into their collections. Also Kate Middleton was recently spotted in an emerald green dress by Mulberry.

Inevitable pretentious nonsense

OPEN LETTER TO CHANEL

Dear Chanel,

“The world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over.”

We’re guessing someone in Ukraine wrote that in Italian, and then paid a native-Mandarin speaker to translate it into something that has to resemble English. Or maybe you just typed random words into Google translate. And then you got in John Wright, made him wave a lightbulb around in the air, before collecting a cheque bigger than most people’s lifetime earnings for directing Brad to sprout that drivel in ‘artistic’ hushed tones.

Oh dear, dear Chanel.

All you had to do was give him a haircut, get rid of that silly facial hair and make him take a shower.

Film him with his shirt off.

Spritz-spritz.

Fade.

The End.

It really isn’t rocket science.
With love,

Little Soho

Style icon: Sophie van der Stap

Some women have it all; beauty, brains, outstanding fashion sense and an impeccable talent. And if these women would ever decide to form a club, best selling writer Sophie van der Stap would be their leader.

Her first book, ‘Girl with the nine wigs‘ is about her fight against cancer at the age of 21, which immediately became an international best seller. With ‘Girl with the nine wigs‘ and ‘And what if this is love?‘ on her name, she keeps on inspiring us.

The writing glamazone, known for her outstanding skills with the key pad, has currently parked herself in Paris. Not only is the Parisienne a recurring name in the annual ‘Best dressed‘ Jackie magazine list and has she been a guest of honor at a Chanel show, now the graceful beauty’s book will be made into a film by oscar-winning producer Andreas Bareiss.

Sophie’s success seems to have no limits and we’re curious to see what the style icon will bring us in the future.

Little Black Jacket

“The perfumes may be the financial fuel in Chanel’s tank, and the 2.55 bag the killer accessory, but seven decades after its inception, the little black jacket is the beating heart of Chanel’s ready-to-wear.”

And if you weren’t already a fan of Chanel’s classic jacket, you will be after you visit the exhibition in London at the Saatchi Gallery. Karl Lagerfeld invited all of his muses in front of the camera, showing off the brand’s signature piece styled in 100 different ways. The exhibited black and white photographs show style icons like Alexa Chung and Vanessa Paradis flaunting the jacket.  Don’t forget to check out how Kanye West is rocking the LBJ.

A broccoli purse, anyone?

Food and fashion are both dominating points of interest here at Little Soho. However, up to now combining the two of them didn’t really seem like a good idea. Talented photographer Fulvio Bonavia had other thoughts on the matter and published a book  called ‘A Matter of Taste.’  The book illustrates high end fashion pieces from the world’s most famous designers made from all sorts of food.  How about a sardines belt, a lettuce dress by Alexander McQueen or a blackberry Chanel purse?

Check out more of the seducing fashion showpieces by Fulvio at www.fulviobonavia.com.

Fashionable Chewies

It’s rather posh but it looks so nice; the little cans filled with chewing gums from brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, D&G and Hermès. You can buy them via www.tooamsterdam.nl. Chewing will never be the same!

Take care of the climate!

Taking care of the climate is the latest trend in fashion world. Take for example Chanel and Lily Cole. Chanel is organizing an auction this week and the British top model is selling shirts to contribute to the environment.

Famous auction house Christie’s will auction a luxury week entirely devoted to everything Chanel. What’s in store for the highest bidder? Front row tickets for Chanel’s haute couture show, cooking lessons from a master chef, a guided tour through Coco Chanel’s appartment and last but not least a meet & greet with Karl Lagerfeld himself. Oh and don’t forget: a free Chanel bag from the new collection! What more do you want?In our dreams we already booked a flight to Paris;)

Meanwhile, Lily Cole is modelling for the Climate Week campaign in England. She is wearing a shirt designed by Eley Kishimito.

Climate Week has asked models, actors, and singers to promote this week and take care of the environment. All proceeds go to charity. Good initiative!
